I first learnt this technique from a book that consisted of a compilation of articles Joe Satriani wrote for a guitar magazine. The book is called Joe Satriani: Guitar Secrets. The technique in question was in turn, taught to Joe Satriani by one of his pupils at the time, the infamous Steve Vai.
In this warm up exercise, you will be playing all the notes in the Chromatic Scale, and you will be using all of your fingers. This is a tricky exercise for those of you just starting out but it will help you out a lot with your picking and fretting.
The Tab that appears below shows the pattern that you will be playing, and in addition to this, the fret numbers listed on the tab also indicate the finger you should be fretting with. Take your time with this exercise and use it as a way to improve your alternate picking style.
Make sure your hands are relaxed as tension will cause you problems in the long run and effect your coordination. Take it slow, steady and accurate.
