
This short guide provides you with an exercise that will help you to strengthen your fluttering techniques on all of your fretting fingers. Fluttering, is another term for Trills - i.e. rapid acceleration of a note with another note, more often than not, the note next to it. Trills are usually used as an embellishment to really set a solo off.
Jimi Hendrix used them a lot in order to break up long single string runs. Trills date back to the 13th century and are still in use today by a lot of artists.
The exercise below will work all of your fingers and allow you to hone the speed of your hammer on's and pull offs. There are three bars to the exercise, and you should only pick the first note of each bar and then rely on your hammering and pulling off technique to carry the sound.
The fret numbers in this exercise, also indicate the finger you should be fretting, hammering and pulling off with. Take it slow to start with and then build your speed up. Play with a metronome if it helps.
Once you have practiced the exercise below, you should then practice the same thing on the other strings, and on different locations of the fretboard.
